Backflow testing FAQs

Questions about backflow testing

Questions Bruneau, ID property owners ask about backflow testing and backflow prevention.

Talk to a person
What happens if I miss the backflow test deadline?
Utilities usually send a second notice, and after that some add a fee or schedule a service shutoff. Calling (833) 990-5874 before the deadline is the simplest way to avoid it.
What does a failed backflow test mean?
A check valve or the relief valve did not hold its required pressure differential. The device needs repair or replacement, then a retest before a passing report can be filed.
Do I need an expansion tank after installing a backflow preventer?
Often, yes. The device makes your plumbing a closed system, so heated water cannot expand back to the main and the water heater relief valve may start dripping.
Who sends the test report to the water utility?
The tester usually files it, either on the utility's paper form or through its online portal. Ask for a copy for your own records.
Is fire sprinkler backflow testing different?
Yes. Along with the standard check valve test, NFPA 25 calls for an annual forward flow test on fire line backflow assemblies. Results often go to both the water utility and the fire authority.
